Buffout 4 Installation Guide by TheSoundOfSnow
This guide is intentionally shorter to provide more simple instructions.
Buffout 4 is a mod that includes multiple game engine improvements, expands specific types of game memory, prevents several types of crashes and even provides proper crash logging if (when) the game eventually crashes.
Buffout 4 completely replaces the following mods available on Nexus, so you don't need to have them:
The usefulness or benefit of these mods, installed with Buffout 4, is currently debated:
Install Buffout 4 manually, without a Mod Manager to prevent errors
Manually Download the Buffout Main File. tbbmalloc.dll is no longer needed for 1.25.0 and newer.
(You only need tbbmalloc.dll for F4 Creation Kit Fixes, located in TBB Redistributables Misc File from there.)
Extract the files into a folder.
Copy these files from your Buffout 4 folder and paste them into your Fallout 4\Data\F4SE\Plugins folder.
Buffout4.dll
Buffout4.toml
Buffout4_preload.txt
If you had the same tbbmalloc.dll from Creation Kit Fixes, overwrite that with the one from Buffout 4from the folder you extracted TBB Resdistributables to, copy and paste tbbmalloc.dll into your Fallout 4 folder where Fallout4.exe is located.
To edit the file, open Buffout4.toml with a text editor
Archive Invalidation should be automatically enabled in latest versions
The integrated setting usually doesn't work properly, so you should always enable it manually
MO2 by default uses separate custom ini files. It is recommended that this functionality is disabled.
Once you have installed Buffout 4 correctly, when your game crashes, crash logs can be found inside Documents\My Games\Fallout4\F4SE folder, with names such as crash-date-and-time.log
(example: crash-2077-08-23-09-13-00.log)
